10 Tips to Protect Your Eyes

We go to the gym, abstain from chocolate cake and drink gallons of water all in the name of good health. But what can we do to protect those most valuable organs—our eyes? We talked to ophthalmology experts to find out what we should be doing to preserve the oft-neglected eyes.

“Eyes are delicate and precious,” says Dr. Andrew Iwach, spokesperson for the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). “Just a touch of maintenance will keep them going for years.”

1. Regular checkups. When was the last time you had an eye exam? If it was age 3, chances are you’re due. The AAO recommends an eye exam before age 5 to check for childhood problems like lazy eye or crossed eyes, and then on an as-needed basis (vision problems or injuries) up to age 19. One exam in your 20s, and two in your 30s can catch problems for early treatment. It’s normal for vision to change with age, plus serious eye problems like glaucoma and macular degeneration (deterioration of retina that causes loss of detail vision) can be treated if detected early. So step up the eye exams when you hit 40 to every two to four years; after 65, every one to two years. Anyone with diabetes, with a family history of eye problems or African-Americans over 40 should check with their doctor about more frequent visits. (In middle age, African-Americans may need more frequent checkups because of an increased risk for glaucoma.)

2. SPF for the eyes. Sunglasses don’t just prevent crows’ feet from squinting, they also block harmful ultraviolet and other rays than can play a role in cataracts and macular degeneration. Fair-skinned Caucasians are at the greatest risk for the latter. Be sure your sunglasses have 100 percent UV protection. “The blue wavelengths--violet and blue--hit the retina,” says Dr. Lylas Mogk, co-author of Macular Degeneration: The Complete Guide to Saving and Maximizing Your Sight. “The best filters against blue are in the amber-orange-brown range of commercial sunglasses.” You should always wear sunglasses when outside (and not just in the summer) but especially in high glare areas like snow or water. A wide-brimmed hat is great for blocking rays—even if it counteracts the cool of your aviators.

3. Eye protection. Sunglasses aren’t the only protective eyewear you should don. Obviously anyone working around construction, manufacturing—any job with machinery and flying particles—must wear eye protection. But even when you’re working around the house, you should guard your eyes. “Hanging a picture, plaster or even a nail can fly into your eye,” warns Dr. Iwach. Any hardware store sells inexpensive clear plastic eye protection.

4. Contact care. “Contacts are a great tool but they come with responsibility,” says Dr. Iwach. Be sure to have a pair of glasses with a recent prescription so that if you get any irritation you can change over. Wearing your contacts when your eyes are irritated can turn a simple problem (irritation) into a significant problem (ulcers). Make sure you care for the lenses properly. “I can’t believe people who pop a lens in their mouth and then put it in their eye. That is not a good idea unless you want to be seeing the eye doctor a lot,” warns Dr. Iwach. Make sure your solutions aren’t expired, keep your contacts clean—and don’t suck on them.

5. Eye candy. Are carrots really good for your eyes? “Carrots are rich in vitamin A, which the retina needs,” says Dr. Lylas Mogk. “But we’re not in the least bit in danger of having vitamin A deficiencies.” However, green leafy veggies like kale, collard and mustard greens, and spinach are good for the eyes because they contain lutein, which studies indicate can reverse symptoms of macular degeneration. And getting plenty of omega-3 fatty acids from fish and flax can help prevent dry eyes. But avoid omega-6 fatty acids, which is tricky in the American diet. Omega-6s are in vegetable oils. “There are very few processed or packaged foods that don’t have vegetable oils,” notes Dr. Mogk. “And the omega-6s counteract the good omega-3s.”

6. Eye lube. Our eyes get dryer as we age. “The biggest reason people have dry eyes is that the tear film doesn’t have the right consistency of water, mucus and oil,” says Dr. Mogk. The oil part of your tears comes from little glands around your eyelids. As you blink, oil is supposed to coat the eyes. But if you don’t have a good eye slick, the tear film evaporates and eyes feel dry. This triggers extra tear glands, which is why your eyes tear up when they get dry and irritated. Omega-3 helps with this. Also, heat and air conditioning can cause dry eyes, especially if you sit near a vent or fan unit. Make sure your car’s vent isn’t blowing toward your face.

7. Quit smoking. Need another reason to quit smoking? You got it: Smoking increases the risk and accelerates the development of cataracts, macular degeneration and optic nerve damage. “I’d be more afraid of losing your vision than lung cancer,” says Dr. Iwach.

8. Eye strain. Any focused work means you don’t blink as frequently. And all the computer work and Internet surfing can take a toll. It’s always good to take a break, change focus. And artificial tears can help with eyestrain, lubricating the eyes to help you work longer.

9. Talk to your family. Eye problems are often hereditary. If you are diagnosed with glaucoma or another eye condition, share that information with your immediate and extended family. “It’s a way to give the gift of vision for the rest of their life,” notes Dr. Iwach. The sooner people are diagnosed, the more that can be done to treat and prevent further damage.

10. Stay healthy. We’ve already seen how eating right (veggies over processed foods) helps with eye health. Exercise increases circulation, which can lower pressure on the eyes, which helps with those who have glaucoma. Getting regular overall physicals may lead to early detection of diseases like diabetes or other systemic conditions that can lead to eye problems. And most important, if something bothers you or feels wrong, get it checked out. As Dr. Iwach puts it, “You get your oil checked regularly, so get your eyes checked regularly.”

Beauty lies in eyes

Eye is a very sensitive organ. Today many of us spend long hours sitting in front of a PC or laptop. Using these gadgets actually strains our eye muscles and causes dryness. Besides, pollution, diseases like diabetes, sinusitis and thyroid can also effect the eyesight. If you are suffering from redness of the eye continuous headaches, blurred vision eye fatigue, the urge to keep your eyes closed, itching in the eyes, spots and strings floating in your field of vision , then you need to get your checked immediately.

Exercise:
Eye exercises help in keeping the six eye muscle, which help the eyes to rotate, flexible and strong If the muscle become stiff, it becomes painful to move the eyes and close the lid. Exercising also helps to relieve the pressure on the optic nerve that transmits information from the eye to the brain. Remember if the optic nerve is damaged, it cannot be repaired.

Here are a few eye exercises that will help your eyes to relax. Most importantly, you can do anywhere.

Eye Massage:
Close your eyes tightly for 5 to 6 seconds and quickly open them. Repeat this for at least 7 to 8 times.
Close your eyes and massage them with the tip of your third finger (ring finger) in circular movements.
Close your eyes. Place three fingers of your hand on your upper eye lids, apply a little pressure and hold for 1-2 seconds, then release. Repeat at least 5 times.

Eye Movement:
This exercise is recommended to people who generally sit for long hours in front of the computer.
Sit and be relaxed. Now roll your eyes first in clockwise direction and then in anticlockwise direction. Once a circle of movement is completed blink your eyes to rest the eyes. Repeat this at least 5-6 times

Clock Exercise:
Imagine yourself standing in front of a really big clock. Now imagine looking at the middle of the clock. Slowly look at any hour mark and that too without turning your head. Then look back at the centre and look at another hour mark. Do this at least 10 to 12 times. This exercise is also beneficial if done with closed eyes.

Focus A Mark:
Sit Near a window and keep a distance of about 50 cm from the window. Make a mark on the glass of the window with a small sticker or a felt pen at your eye level. Look or focus on something far away for 10 - 15 seconds through this mark and then return back to the focus.

Scribble On Wall:
Stand in front of a wall and pretend that you are writing with your eyes, without turning your head. This is very good exercise, which might seem difficult in the beginning but slowly you will enjoy it. Remember the bigger the letters, the better the effect.

Blink Exercise:
Blinking is not actually an exercise but it is very important. Starting at an object uninterrupted for a long time also causes strain and this should be also avoided. So make a rule to blink often.

Good to remember:

  • Have a diet that is loaded with beta-caretene, a vitamin especially helpful in maintaining healthy eyes. Fruits and veggies like carrot are rich in beta-carotene.
  • Contact lenses should never be worn for more than 12 hours. Wearing contacts for long cannot only cause extreme uneasiness, but permanent sight damage.
  • Place cold cucumber slices or tea bags soaked in cold water and press gently for 10 minutes before going to bed. This pacifies your eyes and also prevents puffiness.
  • Always wear UV protective sunglasses while getting out in the sun.

Should I have laser surgery for nearsightedness?

  • Laser surgery to correct nearsightedness is an elective procedure. There is no medical reason to have this surgery. Nearsightedness does not threaten your vision or your health. You must decide for yourself whether the benefits of surgery outweigh the risks.
  • Having surgery does not guarantee that you will never have to wear glasses or contact lenses again. Even if surgery fully corrects your nearsightedness, it does not change the normal aging process of the eye (presbyopia), which means that you may need reading glasses after age 40.
  • Laser surgery is considered a very safe procedure, but it is not risk-free. While most complications are not serious, they may be bothersome. Vision-threatening complications are rare.

It is important to keep in mind that the most commonly used surgical procedures to correct nearsightedness cause permanent changes in the eye. They cannot be reversed.

Am I eligible for surgery?

Before you have surgery, an ophthalmologist will examine you to determine whether you are a candidate for the surgery. You may not be eligible for surgery if:

  • Your vision has not been stable for at least a year.
  • You have a disease or abnormality of the cornea, such as keratoconus, keratitis, corneal edema, or thinning of the cornea.
  • You have irregular astigmatism.
  • You have moderate or severe dry eyes.
  • You have an uncontrolled autoimmune or connective tissue disease.
  • You are younger than 18.
  • You are pregnant or breast-feeding. Temporary changes in the way your eyes focus occur during pregnancy.

What types of laser surgery are available?

There are two main types of laser surgery for nearsightedness:

  • LASIK (Laser in-situ keratomileusis). Sometimes called “flap and zap,” LASIK makes a small flap in the cornea and removes tissue underneath the flap or in the area exposed by the flap. Most people feel mild irritation for a few hours after surgery. But most people can see well and can return to work the next day.
  • PRK (Photorefractive keratectomy) and LASEK (laser epithelial keratomileusis). PRK and LASEK use a laser to reshape the cornea. With PRK, the surface of the cornea is removed and then the cornea is reshaped. With LASEK, the cornea surface is loosened and pushed out of the way, and then the cornea is reshaped and the surface replaced. Both surgeries have a longer recovery time than LASIK, and there is usually some discomfort or mild pain during the first few days after surgery. PRK, LASEK, and LASIK have very similar long-term results.

What are the risks of surgery?

Most people who have laser surgery for nearsightedness are very happy with the results. Be sure to weigh the possible risks against the likely benefits.

Side effects and complications may vary slightly depending on which type of surgery you have. In general, side effects or complications of surgery may include:

  • Clouding of the cornea (haze).
  • Dry eye symptoms.
  • Night vision problems.
  • Glare or increased sensitivity to bright light.
  • Double vision.
  • New astigmatism.
  • Undercorrection or overcorrection.
  • Unstable vision (regression).
  • Reduction in best corrected vision, which is the best possible vision you can have using glasses or contact lenses.
  • Not being able to wear contact lenses as a result of changes in the shape of the cornea.

Serious complications that threaten vision, though rare, may include infection of the cornea (keratitis), ulcers on the cornea, puncture of the cornea or eyeball, elevated pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure), or retinal detachment.

What is a cataract?

Illustration of the anatomy of the eyeA cataract is a painless, cloudy area in the lens of the eye that blocks the passage of light to the retina. The retina is the nerve layer at the back of the eye. The nerve cells in the retina detect light entering the eye and send nerve signals to the brain about what the eye sees. Because cataracts block this light, they can cause vision problems.

What causes cataracts?

Aging and exposure to sunlight can cause cataracts. Changes in your eyes are often a normal part of aging, but they do not always lead to cataracts.

Cataracts can also happen after an eye injury, as a result of eye disease, after you use certain medicines, or as a result of health problems such as diabetes.

Sometimes children are born with cataracts.

What are the symptoms?

Cataracts can affect your vision.

  • You may have cloudy, fuzzy, or foggy vision.
  • You may see glare from lamps or the sun. You may have trouble driving at night because of glare from car headlights.
  • You may need frequent changes to your eyeglasses prescription.
  • You may get double vision in one eye.
  • Your near vision may improve for a short time if you get a cataract. This temporary improvement is called second sight.

Sometimes cataracts do not cause vision problems.

How are cataracts diagnosed?

Your doctor can find out if you have cataracts by doing a physical exam and by asking questions about your symptoms and past health. You may need other tests to make sure you have a cataract or to rule out other conditions that may be causing vision problems.

How are they treated?

Surgery is the only way to correct vision loss caused by cataracts. But cataracts in older adults do not always need to be removed. The vision loss from a cataract often happens slowly and may never become severe.

There are a number of things you can do that may help you manage your vision problems. Many people get along very well with the help of eyeglasses, contacts, or other vision aids. Keep your eyeglasses or contact lens prescription up to date. Also make sure you have plenty of lighting in your home. You may be able to avoid or delay surgery.

Whether you need cataract surgery depends on how much of a problem the cataract causes for daily activities like driving and reading. Surgery is almost always by your choice (elective) and can be scheduled when it is convenient. For people who do decide to have surgery, the surgery usually works very well.

Some people have to have surgery. Children are sometimes born with cataracts that need to be removed. Other people may get cataracts after an eye injury or as a result of eye disease or other health problems. Cataracts from these causes may also need to be removed.

How can I prevent cataracts?

There is no proven way to prevent cataracts. But there are some things you can do that may help slow cataract growth. Do not smoke. Wear a hat or sunglasses when you are in the sun, and avoid sunlamps and tanning booths. Eat healthy foods, and limit alcoholic drinks. Keep diabetes under control.

The Eye - It Is Not Only A Window To Your Soul But Also A Window To The World

The Focus Is The Eye

We all know what the eye is, right? But, what is it exactly? The eye is a spherical object; it is about one inch in diameter. The eye is actually considered an organ; well it is a dual organ since most of us do have two eyes. The eye is contained in a bony type pocket, called an orbit, which does enclose it completely, except for the front part. There are openings at the rear of this "pocket of bone" or, orbit, for nerves and blood vessels.

What Exactly Is The Eye Made Of?

The very outside layer of the eye, the membrane, is called the conjunctiva. This covers the "sclera, or the white of the eye. It is very delicate, this membrane.

The sclera does almost wrap around the whole eye. It is however interrupted bye the cornea (covers the front of the eye) and that very important nerve, the optic nerve at the back. The cornea is usually what gets touched when we get poked in the eye.

Now, behind the cornea lies the iris (the pigmented part that gives the eye its color). And, in the center is the pupil. The lens, it is only pea sized, lies behind the iris.

Well, we could get more complicated, but, I think this will do for us right now.

OK, So, What Is On The Other Side Of The Eye?

Well, the retina, a very delicate membrane (almost like tissue) lines the eyeball. It is directly connected with the brain, through the optic nerve. The retina uses more oxygen and nutrients per gram of tissue than almost any other parts of our body.

At the center of the retinal is a tiny little area, the macula, (that is actually Latin for "spot"). It really is only a spot, but, it is extremely critical to sight.

The macula is in the center of the retina. The macula is responsible for focus. It enables us to analyze fine details.

Perhaps the hardest "working" part of our eye is the retinal. It has lots of layers of vessels, neurons and photoreceptors, these are all continuously active.

The eye is actually one of the most complex organs of our bodies. Its capabilities far outweigh even computers.

Over 13 million Americans actually suffer from age related macular degeneration. There is realistic hope based on the latest research, experience, and knowledge.

No one needs to become experts at eye anatomy or function. But, the more we know, the more we can be pro-active in our own eye care.

Effective Ways To Ensure Good Eyesight

Spending countless of hours in front of a computer or television can give anybody eyestrain. This condition is brought about by fatigue and the loss of the eyes' ability to focus. If left unchecked, eyestrain can cause other ailments, such as neck or back pain, or could lead to more serious eye problems, including myopia.

If your work requires you to use the computer for many hours or if your favorite past time is watching countless of reruns and reality shows on the television, then you should do something about your eyestrain. Here are some things you need to remember to help minimize, if not totally get rid of, eyestrain:

Visit Your Ophthalmologist

If you have been experiencing eyestrain often, you need to have your eyes checked by a specialist. Eyestrain can be a cause of an underlying condition or infection. Sometimes this problem can also be due to irritation or incorrect eyeglass prescription. You can even ask some doctors to give you glasses that are specifically designed to reduce eyestrain when in front of a computer screen. When it comes to health, especially that of your eyes, it is better to be sure than sorry.

Take A Break

If you stay in one position for a long time, it is common to feel muscle strain and cramps in some parts of your body. You can get rid of these cramps by moving around and changing your position. The same is true for your eyes. Since different muscles are involved with the workings of your eyes, shifting or changing the focus of your attention every so often can help relax some of your overworked eye muscles.

If you are watching TV, shifting your gaze to the ceiling or floor or closing your eyes during commercial breaks could help a lot. If you are driving, looking at the speedometer or side mirror once in a while would is a good thing to do. Lastly, if you are working or playing in front of a computer, looking outside the window every ten minutes or so can really prevent eyestrain.

Maximize Contrast And Color

Television sets and computer monitors are equipped with contrast and color controllers. You need to make sure that you maximize contrast and adjust color settings. It is important to note that poor contrast does not have crisp edges, so eyes need to focus and concentrate more to discern whatever is on the screen. The same is true with color. Using the full spectrum of colors would help reduce strain on your eyes.

Minimize Glare

If you think that flat technology is created just to make users more chic and glamorous, you are definitely mistaken. This technology is actually more eye-friendly because it greatly reduces glare. If you have the resources, it would be best to buy new flat screen for your computer and television. If you cannot afford to buy just yet, you can always rely on anti-glare screens for monitors. Furthermore, it is always good for your eyes to read on paper rather than from your PC screen.

Perform Eye Exercises

As mentioned earlier, muscles are responsible for your eye movements. Much like other muscles in your body, you also need to exercise your eye muscles. Looking from side to side, up and down or simply rotating your eyes is important in training these muscles.

Stay Away From Irritations

Another cause of eyestrain is irritations from wind, dust, a grain of sand, exposure to sunlight, and even contact with harsh ingredients. Your eyes are very sensitive so you need to wear sunglasses every time you drive or go outside to protect your eyes from the irritants enumerated above.

Protect Your Eyes During Sport

Our eyes are obviously pretty valuable to us, and I would image that generally none of us give our eyesight a second thought. But obviously we should do.

If you've had a life with perfect or at the very least good vision life would be pretty horrendous with the loss of vision or even severely impaired vision.

In the work place we all take precautions to protect our eyes and even at home when doing some DIY or gardening we all take the necessary steps to protect our eyes, but what about when playing sport?

Any number of sports offer up the opportunity to damage your eyes, this is why sports eyewear is so important.

So many seemingly harmless sports can potentially cause permanent damage to your vision such as fishing.

Sports eyewear is unlike normal sunglasses due to the make up of the lenses and the frames, which have to be more robust to with stand the stress and strain of partaking in sports.

Whatever your passion, fishing, golf, tennis, skiing or hunting, quality protective sunglasses are a necessity and you should make sure you have the best. Good sport eyewear should be considered during smart sunny days spent in the snow to protect your eyes and helps to see more clearly.
